It took a bit of patience, but Monster Hunter Rise finally made it to PC on January 12th 2022. The title from Capcom’s acclaimed series started life as a Nintendo Switch exclusive. After teasing PC gamers with a demo in October 2021, the full game can be enjoyed by everyone.
You might be one of those returning players or maybe you’re new to Monster Hunter after hearing so much about it. Whichever category you fall under, we at Overclockers UK have you covered. We’ll fill you in on everything you want to know about the game, the official system specifications, and some amazing gaming PCs for you to start slaying monsters on.
What is Monster Hunter Rise?
Monster Hunter Rise is the sixth instalment in the series, following 2018’s Monster Hunter World. It was this prior instalment that dispensed with traditional numbering for the series. In this action RPG, you play as a titular Hunter, tasked with slaying or capturing the large monsters threatening Kamura Village. You use an array of weapons, tools, and environmental factors to fell each foe. How you deal with each monster is up to you, and with no right or wrong answers that makes every encounter incredibly varied.
Keeping the seamless map introduced in its predecessor over the zoned areas of earlier games, Monster Hunter Rise continues to evolve franchise gameplay. Your new animal companion, the pup-like Palamute, can be ridden across the map and into combat. A very good boy indeed. You’ll also be accompanied by Palicoes, cat-like companions that support you during hunts.
There are also Wirebugs for traversal, adding the verticality that earns the game its name. As well as helping you do your best Spider-Man as you grapple and swing around, they have combat applications to boot. They interact differently with each weapon type for new moves and combos. Plus, they can even be used to mount and control monsters themselves. Your monster can then be set to fight another for some kaiju carnage. Yes, you read that right.
What is Rampage Mode?
“The Rampage” was a calamitous onslaught of monsters that assaulted Kamura Village in the past, and now keeps occurring in the present. In Rampage Mode you must defend the village from these attacks. This tower defence style activity makes for a change of pace to the hunts that populate the rest of the game.
During Rampage missions, you’ll need to set up defensive measures, siege weapons, and instruct NPCs to attack monsters as you do the same. Monsters will attack in hordes you will only have a few moments between to prepare. Different monsters will have different priorities during the attack, such as targeting barricades. Watch out for the dangerous apex monsters as you work towards victory.
How Do Multiplayer Quests Work?
You can enjoy special co-op quests in Monster Hunter Rise with up to three other players. Unlike Monster Hunter World, these are separate from your single-player hunts and a perfect way to play with friends. They’re easy to start too. Just talk to Senri the Courier in Karuma Village, start or join an online lobby, then play with your friends and other hunters around the world.
While you will be able to join in quests with other PC players, there is no crossplay support for Monster Hunter Rise at present. That means you sadly won’t be able to hunt with any friends you have playing on the Nintendo Switch.
